Covid-19: Recoveries outnumber new cases for third day running, 3,045 infections detected


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 3,045 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday (Aug 14), bringing the total number of infections in the country to 4,735,547 since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry's CovidNow portal also reported that 4,226 patients recovered from Covid-19 on Sunday, the third day in a row where recoveries outpaced new infections.

Since the pandemic began, 4,656,031 individuals have recovered from Covid-19 infections in the country, the portal added.

A total of 3,040 of Sunday's new Covid-19 cases were local transmissions while there were five imported infections.

According to the CovidNow portal, there are currently 43,431 active Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, with 41,759 individuals, or 96.2%, observing home quarantine and 33, or 0.1%, being treated at quarantine and treatment centres throughout the country.

Some 3.6% of active Covid-19 cases, or 1,567 individuals, are currently seeking treatment at hospitals nationwide, while there are 72 patients, or 0.2% of active cases, currently being treated at intensive care units (ICU) throughout the country.

Of Sunday's ICU cases, 26 are unventilated, while 46 patients require ventilator support.

Malaysia's overall ICU utilisation rate stood at 62.5% on Sunday, with Covid-19 cases accounting for 19.5% of the country's ICU utilisation rate.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry's GitHub data repository reported that there were five deaths due to Covid-19 on Sunday, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country to 36,085 since the pandemic began.

Three of Sunday's Covid-19 related deaths were reported in Kedah, while there was one death each reported in Perak and Johor.
